Francesinha

Little Franchie- Francesinha
In Portuguese, Francesinha means "Little Franchie", and it is a typical cuisine in Porto. There are two theories claiming its origin:
1. It has to date back to the times of the French invasions: French soldiers used to eating some sandwiches with white bread and placed where all kinds of meats, and cheese, but there was one important thing that Portuguses immediately began to put on said sandwich- the sauce.
2. Currently there seems to be another unanimity give credit for its creation. Daniel David Silva, an employee of the restaurant in Regaleira in the 1950s. Having worked in France, Daniel Silva created the francesinha based on French toast, or croque- monsieur, and hence the name.
In general, the main ingredients of Francesinha include sausage, fresh sausage, ham, cold meats (beef/cow) or alternatively, sirloin roast and sliced pork, topped with cheese (melted later). It is usually garnished with a tomato-based sauce, beer and piri-piri, which can vary depending on the restaurants and each one claims to own its own secret recipe. Fried eggs (on top of the sandwich) and fries are optional. Nowadays, some restaurants even add the variety to this typical dish by altering the major combination, such as prawn, shrimp, champignons and cream.
The most impressive characteristics of this dish are always calories and portion. I believe I don't have to emphasize the first point after you read the main ingredients:P
For the girls/women who have normal appetite, two people can share one portion.
You can find Francesinha everywhere in Porto, ranging from common chain restaurants to recommended ones by some renowned references.
I have been to some, and most of them are fine. In my opinion, it is hard to be unpalatable like this combination of FAST FOOD.
If you really need some guide, the following two are the ones I have been and they were nice experiences :) Just provide you as a reference!
By the way, it is superb to enjoy this dish with beer-so, why not having a local beer from Porto- SuperBock with it :P
